Phillips developing uses for Google Glass in Health Care

imageI know we are all waiting for the day that there really is something useful that Google Glass can do for you. Well here is one being developed by Phillips Healthcare and Accenture to help surgeons interact with patient data to become more efficient and effective. If you are unaware of what Google Glass is then here is a brief explanation.

Google Glass is wearable technology that looks like eyeglasses, but without the lenses. Instead, a small prism on the right side displays information via a Wi-Fi or Bluetooth connection to the MyGlass app on Android or iOS devices.

Google Glass was rolled out to early adopter this past year and Google is encouraging users to share their ideas and innovations to help develop the base of applications that this new user interface device can take advantage of. Researchers from the Philips Digital Accelerator Lab has collaborated with Accenture Technology Labs to come up with potential uses of Google Glass in Clinical settings.

Anthony (Tony) Jones, M.D., is the vice president and chief marketing officer for patient care and clinical informatics at Philips Healthcare. He explains, “The most exciting potential application of Google Glass in healthcare is the ability to allow providers to ‘virtually’ be in two places at once, which will have a significant impact on workflow and patient care.”

The idea is for the surgeon or other medical professional to be able to verbally request information on patient status or show images like X-Rays, MRI or other digital images to be able to quickly and simply access information as a reference while working on the patient. Patient vitals or other information would also be at their fingertips to be able to react quickly as necessary to best take care of the patient all while keeping their eyes on the patient.

“It sounds simple, but small workflow improvements like this can reduce errors and have a significant impact on patient care,” Jones says.

Surgery is not the only place where this technology can make an impact. Think about first responders, either medical, fire or police that could be looking forward at the scene and have information being presented that will make their response more informed, safer and of course help with providing a positive outcome.

Currently there are some real issues with this technology that will need to be overcome before it becomes widely accepted. Battery life is the first one that comes to mine. some method of extending the battery life needs to be adapted before this becomes a valuable tool. Also, the display is still a little small so the detail will need to get better so that more information can be displayed at a time. This is a good step and I am looking forward to seeing where this goes into the future.

Scanadu–CES 2014

imageI have a medical background so anything that hints of futuristic health care devices catches my attention. The small device shown in the picture to the right takes 10 seconds to provide a quick vitals workup. This device plans to give you the ability to keep up on your personal health easily. The information is planned to be captured and be available to you over a period of time allowing you to track changes in these readings and compare them to your life changes. This would then give you the ability to see some cause and effect situations that might not be captured otherwise.

They wanted this device to be as easy to use as a thermometer but to give you real information. Watch Engadget’s interview from CES 2014 to get more in depth information.

Arizona Cardiac Surgeons Pay $100,000 To Settle HIPAA Violations

ZixCorp just sent out a partner advisory discussing an article about a five physician practice that was recently fined $100,000 for HIPAA violations, including not encrypting PHI in email.

- April 2012, Forbes.comimageArizona Cardiac Surgeons Pay $100,000 to Settle HIPAA Violations

With proactive, random HIPAA audits now from the Office of Civil Rights, a huge increase in HIPAA audits and enforcement is a reality for 2012. There are many organizations vulnerable to high fines and irreversible damage to their reputation and now is the time to educate your clients and prospects on how ZixCorp Email Encryption services can prevent these harmful headlines from happening to them.

“This case is significant because it highlights a multiyear, continuing failure on the part of this provider to comply with the requirements of the Privacy and Security Rules,” said Leon Rodriguez, director of the HHS Office of Civil Rights. “We hope that health care providers pay careful attention to this resolution agreement and understand that the HIPAA Privacy and Security Rules have been in place for many years, and OCR expects full compliance no matter the size of a covered entity.” April 2012, HHS.gov

HHS Announces Proposed Delay of ICD-10 until October 1, 2014

On Monday April 9, 2012, the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) announced a proposed rule that would delay, from October 1, 2013 to October 1, 2014, the compliance date for the International Classification of Diseases, 10th Edition diagnosis and procedure codes (ICD-10).

The ICD-10 compliance date change is part of a proposed rule that would adopt a standard for a unique health plan identifier (HPID), adopt a data element that would serve as an “other entity” identifier (OEID), and add a National Provider Identifier (NPI) requirement. The proposed rule was developed by the Office of E-Health Standards and Services (OESS) as part of its ongoing role, delegated by HHS, to establish and adopt standards for electronic health care transactions under the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA). OESS is part of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS). As with other proposed rules, this will entertain a 30 day comment period after the publication of the Federal Register (expected to be April 17). See page 2 of the rule to learn how you can provide commentary.

HHS notes how important it is for all covered entities to transition to ICD-10 at the same time, as failure for any one industry segment to comply would negatively impact all other industry segments, resulting in rejected claims and provider payment delays. “Provider groups have expressed strong concern about their ability to meet the October 1, 2013 compliance date and the serious claims payment issues that might then ensue” HHS notes in the proposed rule. “We believe the change in the compliance date for ICD-10, as proposed in this rule, would give providers and other covered entities more time to prepare and fully test their systems to ensure a smooth and coordinated transition by all industry segments.”

Top 10 Things to Know about Meaningful Use Stage 2

  1. The basic framework of the program has not changed. The dollars available through incentive programs remain unchanged for both Eligible Providers (EP) and Eligible Hospitals (EH). The eligibility parameters are (with very minor exceptions) unchanged as well, including which non-physician providers are able to participate in the EP program.
  2. Eligible Providers will be required to report on 17 Core measures and 3 of 5 Menu measures; Eligible Hospitals will be required to report on 16 Core measures and 2 of 4 Menu measures. This is comparable to Stage 1 in the total number required, though the measures are not the same -- some have been consolidated and new options have been added.
  3. The number of proposed Clinical Quality Measures (CQM) that providers will be able to choose from in reporting has increased dramatically. The number has moved from 44 to 125 for Eligible Providers and from 15 to 49 for Eligible Hospitals. Additionally, batch reporting – or reporting on the CQM as a group within the ambulatory environment – is proposed in an effort to simplify the process. The total number of available clinical quality measures will likely be decreased by the time of the Final Rule, but the current list significantly improves reporting options for specialists who felt that the Stage 1 CQM were too focused on primary care.
  4. Allowances for exclusions in reporting the information included in the requirements will change. There really will be allowances only for providers who cannot meet a requirement because of the scope of their practice or issues specific to their geography that will have to be corroborated by the state or the FCC.
  5. CMS has made changes in order to make broaden participation in the Medicaid side of the program. The means of counting patients towards the 30% threshold is now broader in allowing the inclusion of some CHIP patients, as well as all patients with Medicaid coverage, regardless of whether Medicaid is used to pay for the encounter. There are also now some children’s hospitals that are able to participate despite not having a CMS Certification Number.
  6. Eligible providers will no longer be able to include in their attestation reports patient care provided in a location without an EHR by then recording it at another location that uses a certified EHR. The requirement to use a certified EHR for at least 50% of patient encounters in order to qualify for the program still stands, however.
  7. Payment adjustments (otherwise known as penalties) will begin in 2015, as required by the statute. CMS will look at the providers’ behavior in 2013 to determine whether the 2015 fee schedule adjustments should occur. Program participants can attest to beginning their participation in 2014 through a 90-day EHR reporting period, but that must be completed and attestation finished at least 90 days prior to the end of the year for it be considered.
  8. Interoperability is moving from the theoretical to the real. The exchange of information in the transmission of a care summary will no longer be just a test but rather require both making electronic information available to patients and the successful exchange of information between providers using different certified Electronic Health Records.
  9. Patient engagement is an area of increasing focus. The goal is to help patients and their families feel that they are active participants in providing and accessing information related to their health so that they, in turn, increase the levels of successful self-management. CMS aims to get providers talking about health information technology and the patients’ ability to view, download and/or share that information by holding providers accountable for how many of their patients access their data and email their providers. Providing patients with access to their information by providing a patient portal or connecting to a Personal Health Record such as HealthVault will become a necessity.
  10. The requirement to report to Public Health entities is expanding, with the addition of specialty registries and cancer registries. Syndromic surveillance reporting remains a Menu option, however, reflecting the ongoing challenges the states have in implementing their ability to accept the reported information.

Interesting article at InformationWeek discussing Meaningful Use requirements.

With Meaningful Use Stage 2 requirements just around the corner, a CSC report says IT managers should prepare with a more robust system that addresses care coordination and patient engagement.

With the whole reason for the emphasis on installing the infrastructure to collect and share patient care information to provide a path towards better/safer patient care we need to make sure we are ready for the follow up of Meaningful Use Stage 1. If you haven’t started implementing an EMR/EHR Solution in your practice you are going to want to investigate what is available to you.

InformationWeek’s writer Nicole Lewis wrote:

Health IT executives at hospitals and physicians' offices should start working now to implement technology that fosters greater patient engagement, enhances patient care coordination, and advances their organizations' ability to electronically capture data for quality reporting--all three of which providers will need to compete in the upcoming pay-for-performance market. That's the conclusion of a new report published by CSC's Global Institute for Emerging Healthcare Practice.

For more information on Allscripts MyWay Electronic Medical Records product please don’t hesitate calling me at 1-800-640-7506 and ask for Bob Appleby. I will be more than happy to discuss the product and provide you with information on how you can implement this solution in your practice. One of the first questions I am asked is whether anyone has received payments yet. It has been reported that $2.5 billion was paid out for meaningful use in 2011. Stage 2 requirements are being drawn up now as you see in the table above but they have not been finalized as of this date. You need to be proactive and should be focusing on providing capabilities for engaging patients, coordinating care and capturing the data for quality reporting. These requirements are essential for qualifying for meaningful use payments and for new CMS (Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services) payment incentives and for succeeding under accountable care.

Panasonic Toughbook CF-H2 Tablet for the Healthcare Sector

This is Panasonic’s second generation rugged tablet PC is part of the Toughbook product line that is specifically designed for health-care workers. Panasonic states that this product sets: “new standards in ease of use, connectivity and productivity, the CF-H2 is a lightweight, water-resistant, shock and drop-tolerant and easily disinfected tablet device that meets the highest demands for mobility and networking within clinical environments. It allows doctors and nursing staff to benefit from instant access to medical records at the point of care, accurate documentation on patient conditions and medication, and enables greater efficiency of clinical processes.”

What’s Inside:

With the latest Intel Core i5-2557M (1.7GHz) Ultra Low Voltage processor with vPro and the Intel HD 3000 graphics for enhanced multimedia capabilities, the Toughbook CF-H2 performance has been improved more than 400% over its CF-H1 predecessor. The CF-H2 is ideal for power hungry healthcare applications such as Electronic Patient Records (EPR) and Patient Administration Systems (PAS). RAM has also been raised to 4 gigabyte as standard, with up to 8 gigabyte optional, and it comes with a 320 gigabyte hard disk drive as standard with 128 gigabyte SSD as an option. The operating system is Windows 7 Pro.

Features and Benefits List:

Clean, reliable and durable - The CF-H2 has also been designed for easy disinfection, reducing the risk of infections being spread from patient to patient. Maintaining its fanless design, limiting the opportunity for germs to be transported by the device, the CF-H2 Health model features a smooth surface with sealed buttons and no exposed ports. Panasonic has also developed a special exterior case material, which can withstand frequent alcohol wipes. To further aid in disinfection, a Panasonic-designed software utility can be programmed to remind users to wipe the unit down at defined intervals and automatically records a successful cleaning for the hospital’s permanent records.

The CF-H2 remains the toughest rugged tablet in its range. It is drop tested to 90cm and has water, dust, vibration and temperature protection.

Ergonomically designed for clinicians - The CF-H2 is designed for clinicians who need to multi-task whilst holding the device in one hand. Lightweight rugged design (approx. 1.58kg), with an easy-to-grab handle, the fanless device maintains a low surface temperature using its unique heat dissipation system and is available as a dual touch (digitizer and touchscreen) and touchscreen model.

The best screen visibility on the market - The CF-H2 always ensures the screen delivers just the right level of brightness for optimum viewing whatever the conditions, inside or out. To achieve premium visibility the CF-H2 uses a 10.1” display with Panasonic Transflective Plus technology. This operating mode helps to reduce power consumption and enhance battery life as no backlight is required in bright environments. This results in a massive enhancement of up to 6,000 unit equivalent of transflective brightness under a 200K lx environment.

Functionality to fit every purpose - For maximum productivity around the hospital, medical staff need to perform a wide range of tasks. The CF-H2 is ideally suited. Optional Barcode readers are available to assist with data capture requirements. For taking photos, the CF-H2 Health features an optional auto focus, 2.0 megapixel camera with one LED light. For Using Audio Applications whilst working, the CF-H2 features a front speaker to enhance audio capability.

Healthcare workers often need interfaces to connect devices and peripherals for data capture and communication purposes. The CF-H2 is perfectly positioned to fulfill this requirement with a USB 2.0, LAN and serial port (optional 2nd USB 2.0 port in lieu of LAN port) available directly integrated within the device.

The CF-H2 also has all the options covered to ensure medical data is secure. Quick user authentication can be achieved using the optional fingerprint reader enhanced security. There is an optional contactless smartcard reader, which is compliant with ISO 14443 type A and type B, or an integrated, contact smartcard reader covered and sealed with it own latch for maximum protection and security.

Built to stay connected on the move - Ensuring medical workers can always stay in touch when on the move, the Toughbook CF-H2 offers WLAN, 3G (optional), Bluetooth and GPS (optional) for navigation and job scheduling. To improve data transfer capability, the Ericsson F5521gw HSPA+ module with wireless ready connection manager can be integrated as an option, significantly increasing download speeds up to 21Mbps. Available upon request, the device can also be switched into Anti-Theft-Protection mode by utilizing the latest Intel ATP technology.

The power to last - To ensure that medical workers have a device that can work for as long as they do, even when access to power is lost, the CF-H2 can operate for up to 6.5 hours (MobileMarkTM 2007, 60nit) running on Windows 7 by using the hot swappable, high-capacity twin-batteries developed internally by the Panasonic battery division. The CF-H2 charges its 2 batteries at the same time, in a rapid parallel mode, for quicker charge times (approx 3 hours).

All units also use the Panasonic Power Management Utilities technology to maximize power efficiency by managing the power of all relevant resources required by the CPU depending on each task or by definition of individual user profiles.

Improved system start-up - To maximize the efficiency of health workers, the CF-H2 also includes Panasonic’s Quick Boot Manager which can reduce the boot-up time of the device down to approximately 15 seconds.

“This next generation Toughbook CF-H2 for the health sector is the ultimate rugged medical tablet,” said Stephen Yeo, Panasonic Toughbook European Marketing Director. “Listening closely to our existing customers, we have built a second generation device that is more powerful, easier to use and with more functionality than any comparable device on the market whilst maintaining all the essential health features required from clinicians in a busy medical environment.”

Compatibility that counts - To ensure existing customers can continue to use existing peripheral equipment, the new CF-H2 is compatible with many of the CF-H1 peripherals such as docking stations in order to provide long-term product lifecycle stability.

Backed by outstanding service - Every Toughbook comes with a 3-year warranty covering hardware failures for systems used as designed; with a 96-hour repair commitment and a 5-year spare parts guarantee.

3D Printing has been getting a lot of focus lately…

imageHere is another potential use for the 3D printer, body part replacements! Referred to as Bioprinting, the process is used to make biological tissue such as skin, bone and cartilage. 3D printing has been around for over twenty years but researchers recently began using it to create biological structures. The idea is to make custom designed tissue and organs from a patient’s own cells which may in turn eliminate the need for donated organs. While the research is ongoing there has been some interesting research being done at the Medical University of South Carolina by Vladimir Mironov who is the director of the Bioprinting Research Center at the university.

Dr. Mironov MD, PhD explains that Bioprinting is a mixture of both Art, Science and Technology. In his mission statement titled: On Art and Science: Bioprinting & Pygmalion’s Dream? he discussing how his vision of this science was born from his artistic beginnings. He talks about how in the scientist’s everyday life they are constantly using art to describe and show their ideas, whether it is through description, drawings, photography, or modeling they use artistic methods to present their ideas to others.

Their Roadmap shows the starting with creating blood vessels to carry blood and nutrients to the cells in the tissue that they want to create. This is the first step in creating the infrastructure of the organ replacements. It certainly is an exciting time to be alive and it will be interesting to see how this research progresses in the years to come.
