The Real Benefit of Intel Optane Memory

Optane Memory InstallationIf you have watched any of Intel’s demonstrations of the benefits from using Intel’s new Optane Memory Technology, you would possibly come away with the impression that you could get away with less RAM memory in your system if you use it. They use the fact that accessing files is faster in a system with Optane Memory than without it which is true if it has been cached especially. They also justified the expense by stating that if you decrease the amount of RAM in your system the cost of adding the Optane memory will be about the same without a loss of speed.

This is probably true if you are a one at a time application user. Most of are not so while I agree that the Optane Memory will show the best speed increase with spinning drives, I would suggest that you still shell out the extra cash to get the most RAM possible to help you maximize the speed of the machine.

Another Cloud Storage Space gets peeled back

Amazon has announced that it will no longer offer an unlimited storage plan in its Amazon Drive consumer service. In its place, Amazon will price cloud storage at $60 per 1 TB. If you look around, this really isn't a bad deal. Compare to other services out their like Dropbox for one, that has the same offer for $99.

Now, Amazon is offering storage plans of 100 GB ($20 per year) and 1 TB ($60 per year), and anyone who wants additional storage can pay another $60 per 1 TB. Additionally, all Amazon customers get 5 GB of free storage. And if you’re an Amazon Prime member, you get unlimited photo storage. (Which makes this service a good option for those who wisely choose to backup their phone-based photos to multiple places.)

The change is effective today, Amazon says, and customers who are already paying for unlimited storage will retain that perk until their current subscription expires. At that time, they will be switched to a 1 TB plan at $60 unless auto-renew is disabled.

How do you backup your photos?

_MG_3971_editedAlmost everyone these days take pictures with some form of digital photographic device whether it is your phone, digital camera or your own personal Drone Open-mouthed smile. Unlike the old days when you had your negatives and  prints to fall back on today a cyber attack or drive failure can wipe out your entire photo library.

Suzy Pratt wrote an article for Digital Photography School discussing the methods you might consider in protecting your photographs. Rule of thumb for backups, have at least three copies (the original, and two backups) with the backups on different storage media and at least on copy of premise. Falling this basic rule will help to prevent the heartache of losing everything from either a hardware failure or from a dreaded cyber attack.

I have my photos backed up locally on two drives in my computer, a USB drive a take offsite and most of photos go up into the cloud to SmugMug for safekeeping as well as making them available to family and friends. I’d also love to hear from you about how you protect your digital memories.

Build an On-Line Company-Wide Data Store

One of the ideas that I have been toying with is how an organization that has only a few users design their document storage around a cloud option rather than with an on premise server. There are several questions that come up when considering this and I would like to explore these in this post.

I am going to approach this with the thought of using Microsoft Office 365 has the core product and then explore other options that might enhance this total solution. In a smaller environment that has fewer than 150 users and doesn't have a need for Microsoft's Access Database Program, then Small Business Premium Subscription will provide each user with Microsoft Office desktop installations, hosted Exchange and on-line storage.

Storage

Each user license provides a personal storage using OneDrive of 1 TB and in a Team Site (SharePoint) an initial 1 TB plus 500 GB's per licensed group member. In a small group of 5 licensed employees, each employee would have 1TB personal storage and the group would have 3.5 TB's shared storage.

As you can see, the more people you have in the group your team shared storage will grow quite quickly. In a lot of cases, the cost of having this much storage on a local file server would increase the cost of the initial equipment and the cost of your backup of that data. If you wish to have cloud backup, you're going to have the cost and logistics of getting that data off-site as well.

Backup

Microsoft provides some limited backup of you data but doesn't have a true archival backup solution. Luckily we do. Using our Cloud backup program, we have the ability to back up the entire contents of your Office 365 site for just pennies per user per day. In the example of a five user office, $21.25 per month. This includes backing up all of your data including your SharePoint and your Exchange data. And it is

easy to setup and restore from as necessary.

clip_image001

Setup

In this example you see that I have several SharePoint sites setup on our system. The primary site is our Team Site which contains different kinds of list data, calendars, announcements and links to special information including tutorials, vendor sites and other special pieces of information. I have also created a subsite called PAconnect. This is a site's sole purpose is as a document holder for our on-line document storage. I have shared this site with everyone in our organization so everyone has access to the information here. The last subsite that I have here is a SharePoint site that has limited access. Only the admin group of people will ever be able to access the data located here. You see here that you want to put some thought behind how you set up your SharePoint sites, what their use is, in other words what kind of information you want to put there and lastly who you want to be able to access it. Your administrator of the account has the rights initially to set up the rights mask for the site so whomever is in control will be the one that can set this up.

Here is a link that will help you get started with understanding SharePoint Libraries.

clip_image002

Synchronizing your Library

Once you have created the file structure of your library you will want to create your synchronization to it to your desktop This enables you use it just as you would any document folder you have on your computer. With synchronization setup you will be able to easily access, update current documents and store new documents to your shared area. The other benefit of SharePoint Libraries is versioning. This gives you the ability to restore your document to an earlier version if you make a mistake. Your site admin needs to setup this up and will enter how many earlier versions to keep available.

clip_image003

Turn on Versioning

By default, versioning is turned off. To turn it on and implement your versioning decisions, you must either have Full Control or Design permissions. The picture above shows you the options that are available when your edit the Library's Settings. A good overview of what all of these options are and what they allow you to do can be found here. This is a link to your on-line SharePoint Help site. Another great place to start looking at to learn how to use document libraries.

Intel's SSD Drive Pricing bringing them into the mainstream

We have noticed great pricing on Intel's SSD hard drives making them a great alternative over the older spinning plate designs of the past years. Why do you want to jump to this technology? Speed! Once you have jumped to SSD technology you will never go back. I currently boot into my systems in less than 30 seconds and that includes my login. If you don’t need extra storage than you will probably be able to get by with a 250GB drive. This is a great size for office workers that are attached to network servers that are storing all their information up to the server and have no need for great amounts of local storage.

If you need more, than go with either a 500GB or 1TB. They too are very reasonable but are more of a premium than their spinning platter counterparts. Be sure when you are getting a quote for your new workstation that you ask for a comparable price for a SSD upgrade on your new system. Believe me when I say that it will bring a big smile to your face.

Microsoft reneges on Unlimited OneDrive Storage

Ed Bott from ZDNet reported that Microsoft has annouced that they are rolling back on their annoucement of unlimited storage for users of Office 365. Microsoft blames a few bad eggs who have taken advantage of storing very large digital collections to the cloud after Microsoft announced on October 27, 2014 that everyone would be upgraded to unlimited OnDrive storage plans.

Here's the key part of tonight's announcement:

  • We're no longer planning to offer unlimited storage to Office 365 Home, Personal, or University subscribers. Starting now, those subscriptions will include 1 TB of OneDrive storage.
  • 100 GB and 200 GB paid plans are going away as an option for new users and will be replaced with a 50 GB plan for $1.99 per month in early 2016.
  • Free OneDrive storage will decrease from 15 GB to 5 GB for all users, current and new. The 15 GB camera roll storage bonus will also be discontinued. These changes will start rolling out in early 2016.

Ed Bott's article does a good job detailing out what has occurred and if you are interested you will want to give it a quick read.

OneDrive now allows you to upload 10GB size files

imageMicrosoft sent out notification yesterday announcing that they have increased your file size upload to 10GB files and  if you have the free Outlook.com email account you only have a 15GB storage limit. If you have upgraded to Office365 then you have a 1TB storage limit. Do you think that it is worth $60/year to have a 1TB of cloud Storage?

An Ideal Solution for:

  • Medical Data Storage/HIPAA Compliance
  • Collaborative File Sharing
  • High Availability RTO/RPO
  • SAN / Tier-2 Storage with low operating costs

How does it work?

The ioSafe 1513+ connects to your network, preferably at the main router or switch. A network drive (or "share") can be created that allows everyone on the local area network (LAN) with proper permissions to "see" the common drive and share the data. The data can also be made available to the wide area network (WAN - aka the Internet) by allow applications and data to be "forwarded" to the NAS at your router.

These are great products that we use for onsite backup solutions where there is too much data to effectively get it offsite. We typically use them with Veeam for our larger VMware installations.

IoSafe - SynLocker Ransomware Alert

An alert has gone out from IoSafe warning against a possible situation that could harm your IoSafe installations. Check to see if you have a unit that might be affected. An upgrade to their DSM software. See information below:

We would like to inform you that a ransomware called "SynoLocker" is currently affecting some ioSafe/Synology NAS users. This ransomware locks down affected servers, encrypts users’ files, and demands a fee to regain access to the encrypted files.

We have confirmed that the ransomware only affects ioSafe/Synology NAS servers running older versions of DiskStation Manager by exploiting a security vulnerability that was fixed and patched in December, 2013.

Affected users may encounter the following symptoms:

  • When attempting to log in to DSM, a screen appears informing users that data has been encrypted and a fee is required to unlock data.
  • Abnormally high CPU usage or a running process called “synosync” (which can be checked at Main Menu > Resource Monitor).
  • DSM 4.3-3810 or earlier; DSM 4.2-3236 or earlier; DSM 4.1-2851 or earlier; DSM 4.0-2257 or earlier is installed, but the system says no updates are available at Control Panel > DSM Update.

If you have encountered the above symptoms, please shutdown the system immediately and contact our technical support here: https://myds.synology.com/support/support_form.php

If you have not encountered the above symptoms, we strongly recommend downloading and installing DSM 5.0, or any version below:

  • DSM 4.3-3827 or later
  • DSM 4.2-3243 or later
  • DSM 4.0-2259 or later
  • DSM 3.x or earlier is not affected

You can manually download the latest version from our Download Center and install it at Control Panel > DSM Update > Manual DSM Update.

If you notice any strange behavior or suspect your ioSafe/Synology NAS server has been affected by the above issue, please contact us at security@synology.com. We sincerely apologize for any problems or inconvenience this issue has caused our users. We’ll keep you updated with the latest information as we continue to address this issue.

SmugFolio for SmugMug now SmugMug for Android

imageThe creator of SmugFolio has been hired by SmugMug and his original program is being renamed to SmugMug for Android. If you are already running SmugFolio for SmugMug your App will automatically be updated and become SmugMug’s official Android App!

"SmugFolio for SmugMug" will be renamed to "SmugMug for Android" and it'll have a new snazzy icon. The new app will be free to download. For those of you who own SmugFolio, you'll automatically receive the update via the Google Play market. It will be the same app you know and love with a few changes:

· You'll now be able to browse other SmugMug user accounts without needing to log into the app. This is a great way to give friends and family easy access to your public galleries on their phones and tablets.

· The app has been made more secure by switching to OAuth for the login. This change will require you to re-login once you have updated to the new app. After you login, your photos will still be available in the app as they were before. You will not need to download them again.

· To make the app more secure and to prepare for some exciting future enhancements, the updated app will now require Android 3.0 (Honeycomb) or above. Those using Android 2.x or earlier can still use SmugFolio, but you will not be updated to the new app. This is not an easy decision, but it is necessary to move the app forward.

SmugMug has a motto that "Your Photos Look Better Here", and I plan to keep that motto true on Android. I hope you've enjoyed using SmugFolio over the years, and I hope you enjoy the new app even more.

Dropbox Upgrade includes Photo Albums Now!

imageSo if you have allowing Dropbox to upload your pictures from your devices to your storage area then you are probably accumulating a lot of pictures there now. If you want to find a group of images around a theme you can now associate them with an Album. This will help facilitate showing them off when you want family or friends to see just a specific group of images. It would appear that each image can only be associated with one album at a time. Which is too bad.

This is a good start but hopefully they will keep working on it to give us some more capabilities.

IOS received updated Dropbox app this week

imageIf you are a big user of Dropbox as a note taking application, and you use it on an iOS device, then this may be of interest to you. There are several new features that allow you post a file now directly to Facebook and Twitter.  It also now supports iOS AirPrint as well. So now you have the options of emailing a file, text messaging a file, message through Facebook, post to Facebook, Tweet and copying the link to a clipboard. If you post to Facebook the file link will be posted and can then be found on your timeline.

I’m not a big Facebook or Twitter poster so these two things don’t hold much interest to me but the AirPrint capability makes sharing a file much simpler. If you haven’t downloaded take a trip to the iTunes store and get your updated copy.

Lexar Multi-Card 25-in-1 USB 3.0 Reader

imageLexmar has released a press release on this new product and we don’t have it in distribution yet as of this posting. Nor do we have an idea of how it will be priced but it should retail around $30 or less. If you have just purchased a new laptop or workstation in the past few months you may want to consider one of these devices when they come out. I have many different devices that I work with in photography and my memory cards keep getting bigger and bigger as I move along. What this device will do for you is to speed up the data transfer from your memory card to your computer for you to backup, process and share from your devices.

It has a pop up type of design that allows you to close it when not in use. This helps to protect it from dirt and other types of damage that might occur from being carried in your camera or computer bag. So when used as part of your portable arsenal it will cut down on carrying multiple devices to give you the maximum flexibility. The reader comes with a 1 year warranty and comes from a memory card vendor that we know and trust.

This memory card reader supports the following formats:

Tonido Desktop might be good for:

  • Home users who need anytime access to files and media
  • Professionals (Legal, Real Estate, Designers, Accountants) who need to share files privately and securely with their clients
  • Mini Businesses who need a file sharing solution

This may work for you if you upgrade to the Pro version to tie in your music and pictures with friends and family using a myriad of devices.

Tonido Cloud provides access to your storage system from anywhere. You can use local storage, Amazon S3, Openstack or any object based storage. Tonido is targeting Enterprises, Universities and Schools, ISPs & Telecom Companies, System Integrators, IT Consulting Companies and Hosting Providers with this service. Pricing starts at $499 per year for up to 25 users. Since you are providing the storage there is no other cost. If you want to setup a controlled cloud accessible service like Dropbox, this could be your best solution.
