Business Email Compromise (BEC) scams

They come in many forms, but they are getting more and more sophisticated and taking companies and individuals for larger amounts of money. Naked Security wrote a report yesterday about the City of Ocala, Florida that wrote out a check after it received fraudulent new payment information that was processed into their system. The scammers used all of the right processes and until the Construction Company called the city about the payment.

Naked Security has a great posting on the many ways that this is happening and what to look for to protect yourself and your organization from this happening to you: Click Here

RPost Email Security made simple

I have been using this product for over a year and it make my encrypting of emails very simple and straight forward. There are many different capabilities that this product provides and is especially helpful in a Law Practice environment with the added feature for documenting delivery receipt of emails and signoffs as well.

Here is a sample of a recent RPost News item:

RPost Adds New Security Automation, APCC Top Choice

RPost simplifies total email security, now with a hosted security gateway solution. Customers, especially small businesses, have all of the email threats and compliance requirements of enterprises, but fewer IT staff and smaller tech budgets.

With RMail Security Gateway, now with full service hosted options, business IT staff can simply change an email routing rule and all of their email will have market leading threat protection, data leak prevention, and rules to trigger all or certain messages to be sent via RMail; automatic encryption, RPX AES encryption, certified e-delivery proof, or for recipient e-signoff.

“As technologies advance and threats get ever more sophisticated, encrypting email for privacy compliance is not getting simpler. In fact, it is getting more complicated,” states Steve Anderson, an insurance technology expert & LinkedIn influencer with more than 330 thousand followers.  “Not all TLS is created equal. Not all email one thinks is going by TLS, in fact is transmitted securely.” Learn more about pitfalls with TLS

Insurance agencies, for example, rely on RMail automatic encryption to detect this simplest, secure transmission to each recipient; with each message returning auditable proof of privacy compliance. Now, agency administrators can simply click an option in a web-tool to enable all messages to be sent via RMail encryption, whether sent from an agency management system, or from their email service.

“RMail consistently makes email life easier for business people. Easy, secure, simple, automatic,” adds Anderson. “And, RMail Security Gateway is just another way that RPost does it. RMail Security Gateway is a great option for total encryption automation.”

[Join Steve Anderson on a December 12 webinar to learn how to automate and streamline email compliance with policy-based encryption solutions – REGISTER HERE.]

RMail Security Gateway automates email security with advanced email encryption for privacy compliance, inbound and outbound threat protection, data loss prevention, and more. It includes proof of privacy compliance (GDPR, HIPAA, etc.), with email tracking, certified e-delivery proof, and e-sign productivity built-in. It is the simplest to use, most affordable full featured total security solution for email and documents; fully hosted, completely managed.

[Read more about RMail Security Gateway in our PDF Guide.]

“RMail SG furthers our mission to think of security in line with productivity. Services should make it easier to do business, all the while focusing on ensuring underlying security and compliance needs are covered,” states RPost CEO Zafar Khan.

Users report adding RMail SG to make it easy to send encrypted from mobile phones, by adding the word ‘encrypt’ to the subject – in particular in the legal sector. Others prefer to create rules to automatically send encrypted to certain recipients, based on message content, or when from certain senders, when privacy compliance is a concern.

RMail has been identified as a top choice for privacy compliance by leading organizations like the Association for Professional Compliance Consultants (APCC).

Interesting article from RPost about a socially engineered eMail caused the loss of $480k

image

Businesses cannot rely solely on cyber insurance policies to protect themselves and their clients from certain cybercrimes. In a recent case, Chubb Insurance refused to cover a cyber security loss of $480,000 despite the fact that Chubb had insured the victimized company for computer funds transfer fraud.
The case involved a cyber insurance policy issued to Houston-based Ameriforge Group Inc. (AFGlobal Corp.) by a division of Chubb Group. Criminals impersonating AFGlobal’s CEO convinced the company’s accountant to wire $480,000 to a bank in China. When the fraud was discovered, investigators learned that the foreign bank account had already been emptied and closed.  Source
As it turns out, cyber insurance policies such as the one held by Ameriforge Group may cover forgery of financial instruments (such as checks or drafts), but insurers may not recognize informal email correspondence containing financial instructions or wire information as qualifying financial instruments. Sending financial instructions encrypted in Registered Email messages may add sufficient formality to trigger cyber insurance coverage.
Fund transfer fraud often involves emails that appear to come from a company employee -- in this case, the CEO. The fact that the email has the weight of the CEO’s authority makes this particular tactic effective, as it is difficult to verify an email’s authenticity unless the sender uses a sender authentication service such as the Digital Seal® sender authentication feature included in the RMail service.
In the Chubb case, it is noted that the fraudster seemed familiar with the nature of the longstanding and trusting relationship between the accountant and the CEO, suggesting that the fraudster may have had access to emails between the two. These “fake CEO email” tactics often include email correspondence written with context, vocabulary and style matching the CEO’s normal email interactions. As always, using the RMail email encryption service when corresponding about sensitive transactions is an important preventative measure.
In this case, the fake CEO email to the accounting director Glen Wurm allegedly said: “Glen, I have assigned you to manage file T521. This is a strictly confidential financial operation, to which takes priority over other tasks. Have you already been contacted by Steven Shapiro (attorney from KPMG)? This is very sensitive, so please only communicate with me through this email, in order for us not to infringe SEC regulations. Please do no speak with anyone by email or phone regarding this. Regards, Gean Stalcup.” Wire instructions followed in a subsequent email with a request to transfer $480,000 for due diligence costs associated with a purported acquisition.

Yahoo ordered to show how it recovered ‘deleted’ emails in drug case – Naked Security

imageInteresting reading about Yahoo recovering supposedly deleted files from their servers for a U.K. drug case. It makes you wonder what else is available that can be handed over to the government to prosecute you. I am not totally unhappy that these drug dealers information was made available for prosecution, however, this may be a real issue for the general private market out there. Just something to think about!

Microsoft Replacing Clutter in Upcoming Office 365 Update

imageInternally and almost everybody here has been turning off the clutter function in Microsoft Outlook. It is been a feature that none of us have really liked very much because of its inconsistencies in the way that it operates. It is planning on replacing it with a feature called “Focused Inbox” which is all ready running in the iOS and android Outlook apps.

Focused Inbox uses a ta andb system separating "information between "focused" and "other" tabs. So now you have a program that is determining what is low or high priority and separating them into these two containers. I have not thought much of the algorithm that that phone apps is using two separate these messages so hopefully it'll start to get better as time goes on.

Clutter did not work particularly well for people who had complex inbox rules already in place to manage their email, or who did not receive enough email for the Clutter algorithms to learn what to do with it. For businesses, the sudden disappearance of email into a separate folder caused some support issues, with administrators having to seek out the administrative controls for Clutter after the CEO's important company-wide email didn't get read by half the employees.

Microsoft promises that when this new feature rolls out in Outlook that the messages and color will automatically be moved over to the other tab. When your outlook is updated Microsoft says that it will give you an opt in option that will appear in Outlook and he will give you the option to start using focused inbox. There will also be an option for you to turn off Focused Inbox at any time as well.

There's going to be another feature that is being added called the Outlook @Mentions Feature. It is a quick tagging function that will allow you to add users to email discussion. All you will need to do is to add the @ symbol in a message and you'll get a list of names with the next letter typed. Recipients of your email that have been tagged in this manner will see their email name in a blue highlight color, so they'll know that they had been added to the thread.

Microsoft states that this feature in Outlook will work with any email service you're using in Outlook. However the blue highlight feature will just be available for Outlook.com and office 365 accounts. This function should be added later in the year for other services like Gmail and Yahoo.

Is Exchange 2013 for you?

imageWhen Microsoft killed the Small Business Server product last year it took away the one function that we implemented the most of for small businesses and that was an in-house Exchange Server. For those people that wanted control over their communication data this was a big thing. The cost difference of having to install a full blown Exchange Server setup vs. what was needed in SBS is a large expense and one that is beginning to be hard to justify. Can we really expect an under 25 user office to put up a full blown Exchange Server to support their employees? In most cases the answer is no!

So what do you do now to get beyond this cost barrier and still have enterprise communication capabilities? Microsoft’s answer is Office365. We have began deploying offices as small as one user to as large as you want to deploy on Microsoft’s cloud product with fairly good results. This past week we had a few indications of Microsoft’s growth pains but they are quickly updating their system and tweaking it to make it better and better everyday. I am thoroughly impressed from a user basis of what they have been able to accomplish and I like the prospects of where it is all going.

Microsoft’s whole suite of Office Productivity packages are available from the cloud now as an ongoing SaaS (software as a service) model and it is becoming more and more reasonable to buy into this approach. If you are a traditional office worker you may not need your Office software on multiple devices but if you are more mobile, take work home, have multiple devices that you use than the SaaS model makes a lot more financial sense.

imageLet’s take Microsoft Office for instance. If you are a single workstation worker, than you only need this suite of programs on one machine. Paying $229 for a perpetual license for that machine may make a lot of sense. However, if you also like to work from your home office machine or your laptop than taking that cost and multiplying it three times becomes awfully expensive, a total of $657. If you go with Office Pro that amount approaches $1,000. With the Office365 Small Business Premium package your cost is $150/user annually and you can install office Pro on up to 5 different devices for that user. Now this package is limited to a maximum 25 users in the company but for many small office environments/businesses this will be a great fit.

So what do you get for this annual fee? Microsoft Office Pro with Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, Outlook, Access, Publisher and Lync. You have access to Office Web Apps which include Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote files via a web browser. Hosted email, you get business-class email, shared calendars, 25GB of storage space per user and the ability to setup your own domain name. Simple file sharing through SkyDrive with 7Gb of personal storage that syncs with your Pc. You can easily share these files internally or externally and control who sees or can edit them. Web conferencing and IM using your Lync communications program. You can conduct meetings over the internet with HD video conferencing, screen sharing, and instant messaging. Share presence, IM and audio calling with Skype users. You get a public website to market your business with a website that is easy to set up using your own company domain name with no additional hosting fees. All of this and a guaranteed 99.9% uptime/availability.

While $150/user annually by itself sound like a lot, the services that you get the and the enormity of the enterprise functions that you receive for that money are great and I feel are easily justified. As we are refreshing more and more of our Small Business Server installations the move to a SaaS model is making more and more sense.

With proactive, random HIPAA audits now from the Office of Civil Rights, a huge increase in HIPAA audits and enforcement is a reality for 2012. There are many organizations vulnerable to high fines and irreversible damage to their reputation and now is the time to educate your clients and prospects on how ZixCorp Email Encryption services can prevent these harmful headlines from happening to them.

“This case is significant because it highlights a multiyear, continuing failure on the part of this provider to comply with the requirements of the Privacy and Security Rules,” said Leon Rodriguez, director of the HHS Office of Civil Rights. “We hope that health care providers pay careful attention to this resolution agreement and understand that the HIPAA Privacy and Security Rules have been in place for many years, and OCR expects full compliance no matter the size of a covered entity.” April 2012, HHS.gov

Vulnerability in TrueType Font Parsing Could Allow Elevation of Privilege

imageMicrosoft Security Advisory (2639658)

Updated: Tuesday, November 08, 2011

General Information

Executive Summary

Microsoft is investigating a vulnerability in a Microsoft Windows component, the Win32k TrueType font parsing engine. An attacker who successfully exploited this vulnerability could run arbitrary code in kernel mode. The attacker could then install programs; view, change, or delete data; or create new accounts with full user rights. We are aware of targeted attacks that try to use the reported vulnerability; overall, we see low customer impact at this time. This vulnerability is related to the Duqu malware.

Upon completion of this investigation, Microsoft will take the appropriate action to help protect our customers. This may include providing a security update through our monthly release process or providing an out-of-cycle security update, depending on customer needs.

We are actively working with partners in our Microsoft Active Protections Program (MAPP) to provide information that they can use to provide broader protections to customers. For information about protections released by MAPP partners, see MAPP Partners with Updated Protections.

Astaro Mail Archiving

2010-12-03_1239Mailbox servers often suffer from the heavy load of growing email traffic and administrators struggle with mailbox quotas and user storage demands. Through the Astaro Mail Archiving Service, you can free up valuable server resources and get control of compliance requirements while improving productivity of end-users at the same time. All of this is provided as a reliable hosted service with no need for additional hardware or software. Learn more about the individual features which make up the Mail Archiving service.

Compliance
Enforce requirements from local laws and regulations.

In many countries, businesses are obliged to archive emails for several years due to legal requirements. Astaro Mail Archiving Service lets you decide what needs to be archived and for how long. Where email audits are necessary, discovery tasks can be fulfilled with special auditor privileges within the archive, following a four-eye principle to comply with data protection requirements.

2010-12-03_1253Modern industrial and governmental rules and regulations make email archiving an obligation for all businesses. Emails must be archived for a certain period of time and in the case of audits, specific information must be presented within due time.

The Astaro Mail Archiving Service gives enables you to offload emails from your messaging servers and provides end users with a stunning discovery experience. The archive also offers granular control over retention periods, so that you can set individual periods per mailbox or even filter for specific content or exclude certain emails from being archived at all.

While these easy-to-enforce retention policies can be configured within the graphical interface of the ArchiveManager, the even more important question is how you will rapidly find and produce important emails when required. Users with special auditor privileges – optionally based on a four-eye principle – can instantly access and search through the companies entire email communication, providing results within seconds. Accessible through a web-based discovery portal, legal departments or auditors are now enabled to easily retrieve information so that the IT department is no longer involved in these tasks.

Designed as a cloud-based service, Astaro Mail Archiving doesn’t require the deployment of additional hardware or software. By hosting the service in redundant data centers that are highly available and practically offer unlimited scalability, initial deployment efforts are kept to a minimum and in the future will scale automatically when requirements are growing.
